József Nagy: Military Events of the First World War in the Tulgheş and Bicaz Defiles (1916-1917)

In the third year of the first world war Romania entered the war on the Entente’s side. According to the contract signed with the Allied Forces, the Royal Romanian Army attacked the Austro-Hungarian Empire on August 27th 1916 on its Transylvanian borderline. The fights reached the Giurgeu region as well, the Romanian 14th infantry division kept the Giurgeu basin under occupation for a month. Austria-Hungary launched a counter-attack with Germany’s help, and in the first days of October 1916 the Austro-Hungarian troops fought off the Romanian ones to the defiles of the Carpathians (Austro-Hungarian XXI Army Corps). From November 1st 1916, after the Romanian troops retreated, their place was taken by the Imperial Russian Army’s troops on the Eastern Carpathians’ line. Austro-Hungarian and Russian troops fought a trench war until January 1918. In the Bicaz and Tulghes defiles several nationalities fought within different armies: Hungarians, Russians, Romanians, Germans and Slovaks. The study presents battle events from the different perspectives of the fighting sides, trying to bring the collective memories of today’s societies closer and hoping for a mutual understanding by the graves of their heroes.
